While Neary was meeting with Rabbi Horowitz and Shmuel, Ken was meeting with Ron Kuby back at Ken’s office. Gary joined them.

Ken put it squarely to Kuby. “Ron, you’ve got to try the Jackson case. I’m sick about this. Betsy can’t do it, and there’s no way that Velie will move up my trial. He was an ADA years back under Neary and has obviously been leaned on by him. He’s part of the old-boy DA network.”

Kuby was more than willing.

“I won’t let those sons-of-bitches get away with this. You can count on me. I’ll make the time to bone up on the case. Troy will be upset that you got deep-sixed, but I’m sure that I can gain his trust. Maybe he knows my reputation for taking on the system and beating the crap out of rotten cops and prosecutors. But tell me more about their case. Do you have any clue who their witnesses are?”

“There are three cooperators, Ron. We know one of them already and Mickey’s at work trying the find out the others. We think the one we know is their main witness. He was Troy’s buddy, but he’s obviously become a turncoat to save his own ass. Mickey found out that just weeks before Troy was arrested, Wee Willie was picked up in Florida for trafficking big time in coke for one of the Colombian cartels, and if he didn’t cut a cooperation deal he’d be facing at least twenty years.”

“Did you say Wee Willie, Ken? I handled a case several years ago for a guy named Wee Willie Wexler for selling dope to an undercover agent on Chess Street. Got him a pretty good plea deal. He only got a year.”

Gary spoke up. “That’s him. Mickey got his rap sheet and that’s on it. It didn’t show, though, that you were his lawyer.”

Kuby was clearly upset.

“Well I was, and we’re fucked. If I handled the trial, I would have to cross-examine the shit out of Wee Willie. And as you know, I can’t do that. The Supreme Court has made it crystal clear that doing that to a former client is an absolute conflict. I’d be disbarred on the spot. I can’t represent Troy Jackson.”

Gary Ricco was not given to cursing, but couldn’t help himself.

“Holy shit, Ken, what the fuck are we going to do?”

“Looks like you’re going to try your first case, Gary.”
